Despite holding a proud place as one of the UK’s biggest exports, the music industry has an abundance of social and economic challenges. These factors have a direct impact on the mental health and well-being of many musicians and industry workers, as revealed in a recent survey commissioned by charity Help Musicians UK.
The report Can Music Make You Sick?, which surveyed over 2,200 participants, revealed that musicians are three times more likely to experience depression compared to the general public, with many working under ‘poor conditions’ and on unpredictable pay.
At the end of 2017, Help Musicians UK, which provides support and advice services to musicians at all stages of their career, launched Music Minds Matter – a free support helpline and service for the whole of the UK music community.
If you work in music in the UK and need someone to talk to, the service can link you to the right advice, therapeutic and support services, as well as Help Musicians UK’s various grants for musicians in need.
