An introduction to Écouter music agency

By Écouter music agency

UK female music artists aren’t being heard!

A recent report found that over two thirds of music acts performing in the UK, are male only. This shocking statistic unfortunately represents the inequality women still face in the music industry. With such an unbalance on our stages, Écouter music agency has been created to fight for music equality, allowing females to take centre stage.

Écouter music agency aims to promote, help, support, up skill and develop female music artists, musicians and DJs, through:

  • Live events
  • Radio shows
  • Artist management
  • Bookings
  • Social media/marketing/PR workshops
  • Label features
  • Industry mentoring
  • Focus groups

We’re proud to provide an unbiased platform for females to showcase their talents across all genres of music. Since our launch, our first featured artists have gone on to release EPs, begin their own radio shows and perform at international festivals and clubs across the summer.

Écouter music agency has now launched a new website to showcase a roster of multi-talented female artists, ranging from singers to DJs. We have already secured bookings with bars, clubs, promoters and events companies to provide female artists for events across London across 2019. We’re proud to be promoting an inclusive relationship between artists, venues and promoters, by championing women in music and we’re looking forward to some exciting events that we’ll be working on next year! You can see our new website here: ecoutermusic.co.uk

We’re delighted to be the latest Women’s Music News columnist; we’ll be providing monthly updates on the latest female talent, our events and industry news.

Find out how Écouter music agency started with an interview with our founder, Vanessa Mallia.

Who are you?

My name is Vanessa Mallia, I’m a DJ, PR Manager and Founder of Écouter music agency – a female focused music agency. My career background is in PR, marketing and social media and I have been DJing for two years.

What motivated and inspired you to start your business?

As a female DJ, I was aware of the challenges of securing bookings and raising your profile. As a result, I began attending a number of female music events, where I networked with some incredible artists. There seemed to be an ongoing issue with many of the artists I was meeting, where none of them had managed to secure any bookings or could promote themselves successfully to build their profile. With this in mind, I decided to start my own event, showcasing live female talent, providing female artists with an opportunity to perform.

This then developed into a monthly radio show and we began taking bookings for various events. Fast-forward one year and the agency has been created to help support artists and provide an inclusive relationship between artists, venues and promoters.

Where is your business located?

We are currently based in London, but have artists, venues and promoters located across the world. Next year we look forward to building more international opportunities for our artists.

What did you do before starting your business?

I have a degree in PR from the University of the Arts and over seven years experience working in marketing and PR for global and national brands. I have also worked for 11 years as a Senior Event Manager at some of the biggest sports arenas in the world – Emirates and Wembley stadiums. My diverse skill set and work experience has helped me build Écouter music agency and helps me to become adaptable in new environments.

What makes your business unique?

Currently there aren’t any other female focused agencies in the marketplace. I wanted to create a brand that not only offers agency bookings, but also supports artist development, training and offers inclusive opportunities.

What challenges have you faced and how did you overcome them?

The most challenging part of this process has been setting up and managing the agency alongside other roles and businesses that I run. But determination and perseverance has been a great motivator to helping me stay focused.

What advice would you give to others?

Whether you’re an artist or entrepreneur, I would recommend attending as many workshops or events to help you understand the market, network with like-minded people and source opportunities. I’m very lucky to be based in London, where events are hosted weekly. I would suggest researching various groups on Facebook or events on Eventbrite to connect with others.

How can people get involved with Écouter music agency?

We’re always on the lookout for new artists to represent and promoters and venues to work with.
