1. R Kelly arrested and charged for ten counts of sexual assault

The end of last week saw R Kelly turn himself over to the Chicago police. He was charged for ten counts of sexual assault across 12 years against four females, three of which were minors. This is just a short while after exposé documentary series, Surviving R Kelly, was released.

2. We still have a long way to go to achieving equality in the music industry

IQ Mag reported that there has been little change towards equality for women in the music industry over the last seven years.

3. Brits 2019 winners

Last week saw the announcement of the Brit Awards 2019 winners. Six out of 14 awards went to women – see the full list here.

4. UK Music asks MEPs to vote for the European Copyright Directive

Music Week reported that UK Music has asked MEPs to vote for the European Copyright Directive, which includes the somewhat controversial Article 13.

5. Small venues business rates hike

Some small venues have been impacted by a business rate rise of up to 800% reported PSN Europe. Michael Dugher, CEO of UK Music along with shadow culture minister Kevin Brennan met with chancellor of the exchequer, Philip Hammond, to call for a rebate for grassroots venues.
